‎Google Drive App

To save documents, photos and other content in Drive, the user must first create or sign into a Google account. In 2023, Google rolled out a spam folder for Drive similar to the one in its Gmail service. In an outage that affected all of Google’s services for five minutes in August 2013, CNET reported that global Internet traffic dropped 40%. Our engineers are conducting a post-mortem investigation to determine how to make our services more resilient to unplanned network failures, and we will do our utmost to continue to make Google service outages notable for their rarity. As that did not happen in this instance, we apologize to everyone who was inconvenienced by this event. During significant downtimes, Google’s App Status Dashboard gets updated with the current status of each service Google offers, along with details on restoration progress.

How does Google Drive work?

The service features unlimited storage, advanced file audit reporting, and eDiscovery services, along with enhanced administration control and new APIs specifically useful to businesses. In June 2014, Google announced a number of updates to Google Drive, which included making the service more accessible to visually impaired users. A Description field is available for both files and folders that users can use to add relevant metadata. In February 2017, Google integrated Drive and the Google Search app on Android, letting users search for keywords, switch to an “In Apps” tab, and see any relevant Drive files.
Introduced in the Android app in September 2016, Quick Access uses machine learning to “intelligently predict the files you need before you’ve even typed anything”. On April 3, 2023, it was reported that Google had also quietly introduced a user “creation limit” of 5 million files around February 2023. The Google Drive software development kit (SDK) works together with the Google Drive user interface and the Chrome Web Store to create an ecosystem of apps that can be installed into Google Drive.

Computer apps

To enable offline access and local syncing, Windows and MacOS users can install a dedicated desktop app for Google Drive that creates a folder on the user’s computer. Ownership of Google Workspace files can be transferred to another user, provided both users have the same type of Google account. In addition to basic file storage, Google Drive integrates seamlessly with Google Workspace apps, including Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. Grabham also reviewed the mobile Android app, writing that “it’s a pretty simple app that enables you to access your files on the move and save some for offline access should you wish”, and praised Google Docs creation and photo uploading for being “easy”. Google also offers an extension for the Google Chrome web browser called Office editing for Docs, Sheets and Slides that enables users to view and edit Microsoft Office documents on Google Chrome, via Docs, Sheets and Slides apps. A Chrome extension, Google Docs Offline, allows users to enable offline support for Docs, Sheets, and Slides files on the Google Drive website.

Experience Drive on your mobile device

On June 25, 2014, at the Google I/O developer conference, Sundar Pichai announced that Google Drive now had 190 million monthly active users, and that it was being used by 58% of the Fortune 500 companies as well as by 72 of the top universities. On November 12, 2013, Google announced that Google Drive had 120 million active users, a figure that the company was releasing for the first time. Summarized, he wrote that “According to its terms, Google does not own user-uploaded files to Google Drive, but the company can do whatever it likes with them”.
The program combined existing, individual programs from Apps, Chrome, Cloud Platform, Maps, and Search into one overall program, and “allows partners to better sell, service and innovate across the Google for Work and Education suite of products and platforms”. The program lets users receive money, coupons and other incentives by referring customers to G Suite. In October 2020, Google announced the new betico Business Plus pricing tier for Workspace that includes enhanced security features and controls like Vault and Advanced Endpoint Management, but not the full security options available in Enterprise editions of Workspace.

Integration with the tools and apps your team is already using

In August 2019, Google announced that it would be shutting down Hire in September 2020, instead choosing to focus on “other products in the Google Cloud portfolio”. The tool lets employers track job candidates’ contact information, as well as résumés, calendar invitations, and allows for business partners to share feedback on candidates. Introduced in July 2017, Hire by Google was a job applications and management tool developed by Google to be used in combination with G Suite.

  • Google acknowledged this issue in 2019, and rolled out the ability to block users in 2021.

  • Google, on June 25, 2014, announced Drive for Work, a new Google Apps offering featuring unlimited file storage, advanced audit reporting, and new security controls for $10 per user per month.

Google Workspace (formerly G Suite and Google Apps) is a collection of cloud computing, productivity and collaboration tools, software and products developed and marketed by Google. Choose folders on your computer to sync with Google Drive or backup to Google Photos, and access all of your content directly from your PC or Mac While Google Drive offers numerous benefits for individuals and businesses, it also has some drawbacks. To further protect user accounts, Google Drive supports two-factor authentication.
Then, on October 25, 2016, Google launched the first hardware product for G Suite, the Jamboard; a 55-inch digital whiteboard connected to the cloud. Eric Schmidt, then Google’s executive chairman said, “we never set out to create a traditional ‘enterprise’ business—we wanted to create a new way of doing work (…) so the time has come for our name to catch up with our ambition”. Google Enterprise, the company’s business product division, was officially renamed Google for Work on September 2, 2014.

  • Google Forms, meanwhile, is a tool that allows collecting information from users via a personalized survey or quiz.
  • Drive can provide encrypted and secure access to your files.
  • Available for free as a beta service, it included Gmail, Talk, Calendar, and the Page Creator, which was later replaced with Sites.
  • Google also offers an extension for the Google Chrome web browser called Office editing for Docs, Sheets and Slides that enables users to view and edit Microsoft Office documents on Google Chrome, via Docs, Sheets and Slides apps.
  • The website and Android app offer a Backups section to see what Android devices have data backed up to the service, and a completely overhauled computer app released in July 2017 allows for backing up specific folders on the user’s computer.

In September 2014, Google released a blog post saying that employees would be able to install third-party apps from the Marketplace without involving administrators. The Marketplace lets administrators browse for, purchase, and deploy integrated cloud applications. The Jamboard is connected to the cloud, and enables people in different locations to work together in real-time through multiple Jamboards or connected remotely through a smartphone companion app. Google Vault, an archiving and electronic discovery service exclusively available to Google Workspace customers, was announced on March 28, 2012.

Google Drive is a cloud-based storage service that enables users to store, access, and share files and folders online. The features are largely centered around utilizing the right sidebar of Drive and other Workspace apps to including utilizing its chatbot to perform tasks with access to files stored across users’ Google Accounts. Google Workspace comprises Gmail, Chat, Meet, Calendar, Drive for storage; Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Keep for notes, Sites for collaboration, Apps Script for building low-code/no-code business applications; and an Admin panel and Vault for managing users and the services. The Quick Access feature for the Android, iOS and web apps uses machine learning to predict files that users will need based on their Drive activity and workday patterns. Google Drive’s mobile apps for iOS and Android allow users to store, share and view files.

The extension can be used for opening Office files stored on the computer using Chrome, as well as for opening Office files encountered on the web (in the form of email attachments, web search results, etc.) without having to download them. In order to view and edit Docs, Sheets, or Slides documents offline, users need to be using the Google Chrome web browser. The three apps are available as web applications, as Chrome apps that work offline, and as mobile apps for Android and iOS. It allows users to create and edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations online while collaborating in real-time with other users. In Shared Drives, file/folder sharing and ownership are assigned to a team rather than to an individual user.

The Starter plan includes email addresses with custom domains (@yourcompany.com), video and voice calls, calendars, 30GB storage, collaborative documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and sites, controls for security and privacy, and 24/7 phone and email support. All Workspace Business and Enterprise plans include access to Gemini for Workspace without the need to purchase an additional add-on. This will not affect access to other Google Services, including YouTube, Google Photos, and Google Play, nor paid content, including YouTube and Play Store purchases. If a user does not manually upgrade to a paid tier and if no payment information is entered in the account admin page, the account will be suspended starting July 1, 2022. On January 19, 2022, Google announced any “G Suite legacy free edition” accounts must be upgraded to a paid tier by May 1, 2022, or the account will be automatically upgraded.
